The Green and White took the match, 6-1
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team opened up its home season Saturday, Jan. 28, when it hosted Oakland University at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The Eagles (1-3) were able to pick up their first win of the 2017 dual season, defeating the Golden Grizzlies, 6-1.
The match began with a bang for Eastern Michigan as the Green and White took the doubles point with ease. Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to take down Samantha Galloway and Alexandra Whall, 6-2, while Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) knocked off Daria Artamonova and Amanda Nillson, 6-3, to secure the 1-0 lead.
Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) began singles play on the same note that doubles ended by defeating Marija Milic, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles slot. The Golden Grizzlies were able to come back within one, 2-1, when Galloway defeated Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco), 7-5, 6-0, in the fifth singles spot. However, Mayerova got the Eagles another two-point advantage with a No. 1 singles victory, 6-4, 6-3, over Allison Motea. Martinovska was able to close out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2, sealing the win for the Green and White. Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) added another point with a straight-set, 6-2, 7-6, win at No. 6, grabbing the Eagles' fifth point while Gogvadze split her first two sets, before taking the third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0.
"We did a good job of staying focused on our energy and winning sets when we got challenged," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Oakland fights hard and you have to earn every point. It was a good solid win we can work on."
The Green and White get back to it again tonight, Jan. 28, when it travels to Southfield, Mich. to square off with Duquesne University at 7 p.m. from the Franklin Athletic Club.
