BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team saw its 72-Mid-American Conference dual win streak snapped Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, by the University at Buffalo, as the Eagles fell, 161-139. The loss marked EMU's first conference dual setback since the 1997-98 season.
Following a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, senior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) got the Eagles on track in the 1000 Freestyle. The senior distance standout claimed the top spot in the race, clocking in with a career-best time of 9:24.28, roughly six seconds faster than his previous personal-best.
Sophomores Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) and Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) provided the Eagles with back-to-back wins, pushing EMU's streak to three consecutive events. Tyson used a strong start to propel him to a first-place finish in the 200 Free with a time of 1:40.35, while Kawaguchi won the 100 Backstroke. Winning the event for the fifth time this season, Kawaguchi clocked in with a time of 49.37.
After a third-place finish by freshman Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga.-Evans) in the 100 Breaststroke, Eastern locked up three of the top four spots in the 200 Butterfly. Junior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) fueled the Eagles' dominating effort, touching in with a season-best time of 1:49.34, the fourth-fastest time in the MAC this season. Behind Burton, freshman Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) and sophomore Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.) posted a pair of career-bests. Saladin clocked in with a personal-best time of 1:50.42, the sixth-best in the conference, to finish runner-up. Meanwhile, Perez dropped nearly a full second en route to a career-best time of 1:52.06 and fourth-place finish.
Buffalo swept the 50 Free, giving the Bulls a 69-62 advantage in the team standings as the dual turned to the diving break.
Junior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) was the lone Eagle to crack the top-three on the 1-meter, earning a score of 303.08, before the Green and White bounced back with an incredible performance on the 3-meter springboard. Senior Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Secondary) became the first diver in the MAC to break the 400-point barrier in the event this season. Scoring a season-best 407.93, Chan reeled in the win. Sophomore Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) was also impressive, posting the fourth-best score in the conference. Gillis finished with 353.25 points to claim second behind Chan, setting a career-best.
Returning to the swimming events, Tyson and Burton claimed second and third, respectively in the 100 Free before a strong showing in the 200 Backstroke cut into UB's lead. Kawaguchi picked up his second win of the day, winning the event with a time of 1:47.81. Perez finished second with a season-best time of 1:49.96, while senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) secured the sweep.
In the 200 Breast, Buffalo earned a few points back, despite a third-place finish by redshirt junior Lance Bergmann (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community).
The Bulls went on to win their third consecutive event in the 100 Fly, as the Eagles' Johnson and freshman Mark Krusinski (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights) turned in second and third place finishes, respectively.
Kawaguchi continued his stellar day, placing second in the 200 Individual Medley, with a career-best time of 1:51.27, a time which also ranks eighth-best in the MAC this season.
Trailing in the team score by 17, a pair of top-three finishes in the 400 Free Relay were not enough to overcome the Bulls, as the Eagles dropped the dual, 161-139.
EMU closes out the dual portion of its 2016-17 schedule next weekend, Feb. 4, at home against Miami University. The senior day showdown is slated for 1 p.m. inside Jones Natatorium.
