YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After opening the season with four meets on the road, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will return to Bowen Fieldhouse for the annual EMU Triangular, Saturday, Jan. 28. This marks one of two indoor meets in Bowen, as the Green and White will also play host to the Indoor Mid-American Conference Championships.
EMU made a late addition to the schedule last week, ultimately heading to the Doug Hansen Open, Friday, Jan. 20, hosted by Saginaw Valley State. There, the Eagles continued utilizing a lineup filled with newcomers, allowing them to gain valuable experience as the conference championships approach. Junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) took home the 60m dash title, clocking in at 6.93 seconds to win the finals. The 200m dash saw sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) take home the gold with a career-best time of 21.83 seconds.
Freshman Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga. – Blanche Ely) also turned in a top-three finish, bringing home third in the 800m with a career-best time of 1:54.42. EMU also came out on top in the 4x400m relay, as the team of junior Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon), Antonio, freshman Trevor Marcus (Dublin, Ohio - Dublin Jerome), and Underwood finished in 3:18.59 to finish first. In the 60m hurdles, freshman Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla. - Blanche Ely) finished atop the podium, crossing the finish line in a career-best 8.21 seconds to win the finals.
Moving to field events, the jumps group had another strong outing. Sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio - Bishop Hartley) won the high jump, posting a personal-best mark of 2.08 meters/ 6 feet 9.75-inches. Fellow sophomores Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich. - Portage Northern) and Micah Peters (York, Ontario - Vaughn Road Academy) also snagged top-three finishes, with Herbert taking third in the long jump, while Peters placed second in the triple jump.
The Eagles still hold onto a trio of top-15 spots in the 5000m according to the most recent NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying list from the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). Redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) remains in the No. 4 spot, as his time of 14:01.99 has held strong since early December. Redshirt juniors Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) and Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) also clung onto their spots, as the duo sit at No. 10 and No. 11, respectively.
The EMU Triangular against Central Michigan and Kent State is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the weight throw. Running events will commence later in the afternoon, beginning with the women's 60m hurdles at 1:30 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, please click here.
