YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics mourns the recent passing of former men's basketball student-athlete Markus Austin, who passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, in Montpelier, Vt. at age 33.
Austin was one of the premiere scorers in Eastern Michigan history, racking up 1,425 points in his career, good for 15th all-time. He is one of just 29 EMU student-athletes to surpass 1,000 points in a career. Additionally, Austin appeared in 116 games, which ranks as the 10th-most in EMU history. His 422 free throws made throughout his career ranks as the seventh-most in EMU laurels. Back on Nov. 26, 2002, Austin scored 36 points against Robert Morris which, at the time, ranked as the most points scored in a single game in Convocation Center history. Austin led the Eagles in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons, grabbing 378 and 414 points, respectively.
After graduating from EMU, the White Plans, N.Y. native moved on to play professionally in the American Basketball Association for the now defunct Vermont Frost Heaves. Funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.
