Eagles Stymied by No. 18 Northern Iowa in Road Dual

Redshirt junior Kyle Springer had a major decision in the loss
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team had a tough go of it in a 35-4 defeat to No. 18 Northern Iowa Sunday afternoon, Jan. 22 at the West Gym.
Eastern's (5-5, 1-4 MAC) only points came in a major decision by redshirt junior No. 33 Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) at 141 lbs. It was his second of the weekend and third of the season. Meanwhile, the Panthers (7-2, 4-0 MAC) had three bonus point wins, as well as a forfeit, to reach the 35-point threshold.
The dual began at 157 lbs. as the Panthers started strong with a 5-0 decision. This was followed by a technical fall to quickly give UNI the 8-0 advantage.
UNI tallied a major decision at 174 lbs. in a high scoring 22-11 affair to lead 12-0. At 184 lbs., redshirt sophomore Kayne MacCallum (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) only trailed No. 14 Drew Foster, 6-5, into the final period, but an early escape and takedown put the match out of reach in a 12-6 loss.
EMU had another tight bout with redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) at 197 lbs. The match was 0-0 after one, and just 1-0 into the third. A takedown in the third sealed the deal though, for the 3-0 decision. Into the halfway point, UNI had the commanding 18-0 lead.
Coming out of intermission, UNI notched the upset at the heavyweight bout over No. 14 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) in a 10-4 decision. The Panthers scored another tech fall at 125 lbs. to break the dual open 26-0.
At 133 lbs., redshirt sophomore Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) had one of the best matches of the day against No. 10 Josh Alber. Wrestling just his second dual of the season, Torres gave up the early takedown, but worked a reversal to tie it 2-2 into the second.
Alber rode out the whole second to get riding time into the third. Starting on top, Torres gave up the escape, but got a clutch takedown to lead 4-3. With riding time still against him, Torres tried to hold on to force OT, but he was called for stalling with about three seconds left, and gave up the heartbreaking 5-4 decision.
The Eagles finally got on the board at 141 lbs. with Springer's thrilling major decision. The Iowa native controlled the entire match, getting five takedowns and a nearfall on his way to the 16-6 score. EMU forfeited the final bout, which sealed the 35-4 final score.
Eastern now has the next week off before heading on the road again the following Friday, Feb. 3, for a dual against the University at Buffalo. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m.
