Eagles Fall in East Lansing to Michigan State

EMU had just one win in the loss
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped its third-straight dual match Sunday, Jan. 22, when it traveled to East Lansing to square off with Michigan State University. The Eagles (0-3) were unable to pick up a point in the 7-0 loss to the Spartans (1-0) Sunday morning.
In doubles action, the duo of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) were leading 5-3 at No. 1 doubles but were cut short following losses in the second and third slots. Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) fell 6-2 at No. 2, while Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) teamed up at No. 3 but dropped a 6-3 decision.
Singles play was a struggle for the Eagles as well. At No. 1, Mayerova came away on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-2 final versus MSU's Erin Faulkner, while Martinovska 6-2, 6-2 loss came to Aslina Chua at No. 2. Gogvadze took the third slot for Eastern, but Davina Nguyen dispatched the Tbilisi, Georgia native, 6-1, 6-4, and Ribero dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Emily Metcalf at No. 4. Veleva was handled by Lexi Baylis, 6-2, 6-3 and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
"Very poor performance today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We need to improve on a lot of areas this week. We played very undisciplined today, we have to battle better than this."
Eastern returns to action Saturday, Jan. 28, when it hosts Oakland University at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
