EMU recorded bonus points in two of the four wins
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team had an early lead, but could not hang on in a 22-14 defeat to Northern Illinois Friday evening, Jan. 20 at the NIU Convocation Center.

EMU (5-4, 1-3 MAC) led by one, 10-9 after six bouts, but were felled in three of the last four to drop the match to the Huskies (5-4, 1-3 MAC). In EMU's four wins, two came via bonus points in the form of major decision wins by juniors Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) and No. 14 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan).

On the other side, NIU came away with a major decision, as well as a fall, to reach the final total of 22-14.

The match began at 157 lbs. with redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) getting EMU started with a high scoring 12-8 decision. The redshirt freshman trailed 6-5 after one, but stormed back for the decision over the No. 4 ranked wrestler in the MAC. Carson is now 4-1 in duals this season.

Redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Husdon) made the team score 6-0 at 165 lbs. with a 7-5 decision. The veteran was trailing 5-4 into the third, but he got his escape to get to overtime, where he notched a takedown to secure the sudden victory win.

That's when NIU rattled off three straight close wins, 5-1, 4-3 and 2-0 to take a 9-6 lead into the heavyweight. Nationally ranked Hutchison took care of business, getting the 14-2 major decision to give EMU the 10-9 lead back with four bouts to go. Hutchison's second major decision of the season moved his win total to 22, and 8-1 in dual action.

The tide turned at 125 lbs. as NIU notched a fall in the second period to storm ahead 15-10. The Huskies extended it further at 133 lbs. getting a major decision of their own to gain a commanding 19-10 advantage.

At 141 lbs., Springer did his all to cut into the lead with his 18-6 major decision. It was his second on the season, and gave him his tenth win on the year. Into the final bout, EMU trailed 19-14, needing a big time win to take the dual. However NIU's nationally ranked Steve Bleise took care of things with a 6-3 decision to wrap up the match, 22-14.

The Eagles remain in the Midwest this weekend for a dual with Northern Iowa, Sunday, Jan. 22. The match versus the Panthers is set for 2 p.m. in Cedar Falls.
