Eagles Suffer 6-1 Setback to Marshall

Maria Paula Ribero came away with a victory in the loss
HUNGTINGON, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's tennis team dropped its second match of the season, 6-1, on the road at Marshall University. After losing the doubles point, the Eagles (0-2) were only able to pick up one point in singles play as Maria Paula Ribero took home a three-set win.
Marshall's Darya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya teamed up at No. 1-doubles to defeat Marie Mayerova and Andrea Martinovska, 6-3, while Ani Gogvadze and Ribero dropped their No. 2-doubles match, 6-2. Finally, Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva fell 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
Eastern was only able to pick up one victory in singles action. Only Ribero grabbed a victory in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (9), by defeating Pomyatinskaya at the No. 5-singles spot. Outside of Ribero, the remaining matches all saw the Eagles on the wrong side in just two sets.
"Marshall has a talented squad," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "They had a high percentage of winning the deuce points in doubles which was the difference. I would have liked to see some closer sets out there in singles, we just need to improve every week."
Eastern Michigan returns to action Sunday, Jan. 22, when it travels to Michigan State for a dual match. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. in East Lansing.
