Eagles Hand Bobcats First MAC Loss in a 53-49 Defensive Battle

It was EMU's first win at Ohio since 2003
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – For the first time since the 2002-03 season, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team defeated Ohio University on the road by a final tally of 53-49, today, Jan. 14, at the OU Convocation Center. The defensive battle was close throughout, but the Eagles (11-6, 3-1 MAC) came through in the end to down the Bobcats (11-4, 3-1 MAC).
As a team, Eastern shot 20-of-50 (40 percent) from the field, including four three-pointers. Eastern came out on top in the rebounding battle by a narrow margin, 36-35, while tying the Bobcats with 13 turnovers.
Junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md. – City College High School) came through with the clutch three pointer with eight seconds left to secure the victory, putting his stat line at 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga. – Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) was the team's leading scorer, pouring in 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers, in addition to four boards and three assists. Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La. – Parkview Baptist) also finished in double figures, scoring 11 and snagging six rebounds.
Bond scored the first point of the game, splitting a pair of free throws for the early 1-0 lead. The junior followed with EMU's first field goal of the game a short while later, making it 5-3 near the 17-minute mark. The Bobcats tacked on one more, and the score at the first media timeout stood at 6-3 in favor of Ohio.
Bond continued leading the offensive attack, scoring his fifth point of the game to make it 6-5. The Bobcats responded on the other end, but EMU came right back with a nice feed from Bond to Thompson for the dunk, making it 9-7. Both offenses slowed down at that point, and Ohio held a three-point lead, 10-7, at the second media timeout.
Toney got EMU's next bucket, drilling the team's first three of the game, making it 12-10 with less than 10 minutes in the half. After an Ohio three, senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va. – Marshall (San Jacinto College)) drove the lane and sunk the layup, keeping EMU within three, 15-12. A Toney floater brought EMU within one, 15-14, with 7:57 remaining in the first.
Sophomore Baylee Steele (Norwalk, Iowa – Norwalk (Des Moines Area C.C.)) then tied things up at 16 apiece with a strong dunk, but the Bobcats came right back and retook the lead, 17-16 on a free throw. After a basket from Ohio, Mangum went to the line and sunk both to come back within one, 19-18. At the final media timeout of the first half, EMU trailed by two, 20-18.
The Bobcats pushed the lead to four with three minutes to go in the half, later tacking on two more to make it 24-18 with 1:45 to go. After another Ohio bucket, the Eagles called a timeout with 1:17 remaining in the first. Bond broke the EMU scoring drought with another free throw, putting the score at 26-19 to end the half.
Toney opened the second half with a three, his second of the game, cutting the lead down to four. The Alpharetta, Ga. native continued his hot start, sinking a pair from the charity stripe to come within two, 26-24. After two from Ohio, redshirt junior Nick Madray (Mississauga, Ontario – Stephen Lewis (Binghamton)) drove the lane, sinking a tough layup and drawing the foul. With 15:53 remaining, Eastern trailed by four, 30-26, in the defensive battle.
With just over 13 minutes remaining in the game, both Steele and Thompson were assessed technical fouls, however it was Madray that continued battling down low, securing a tough offensive rebound and dropping in the layup to make it 32-28. A pair from Mangum at the line made it 34-30, but a three-point play from the Bobcats pushed the lead to seven, 37-30. After going 1-of-2 from the line, Thompson came right back with a layup to make it 37-33.
The momentum kept rolling with a layup from Toney, bringing the lead back down to two, and Thompson tied it up at 37 on the next possession. Ohio broke the tie with a three, putting the Bobcats back in front, 40-37. Following a steal, Bond sunk the fast break layup to come back within two, and Thompson came right back to tie it again at 41.
Another three from the Bobcats gave Ohio the lead, but Thompson bulldozed his way for another layup to come within one. After a defensive stop, Toney sunk his third three of the game to give EMU the lead, 46-44, with 6:04 remaining in the game. An alley-oop from Mangum to Bond kept the Eagles in front by two, 48-46, but Ohio came back and tied it up once again with less than five minutes to play.
After the Bobcats jumped in front by one, Toney came up clutch once again, sinking a floater for the 50-49 lead. With less than 1:30 to go in the game, the Eagles still held a slim one-point lead. With the clock ticking down, Bond drilled a three-point dagger to go ahead by four, 53-49. With one final shot, the Bobcats launched a three, but came up short, and the Eagles emerged with a huge 53-49 victory.
The Eagles will head back to Ypsilanti for a Tuesday matchup with the Broncos of Western Michigan University, Jan. 17. Action from the Convocation Center is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
