YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After kicking off the 2016-17 season back in December, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team resumes action this weekend, making the short trek west to Ann Arbor for the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, Jan. 14, hosted by the University of Michigan.
Back in December, Eastern participated in a pair of meets to get some early season experience before the holidays. EMU sent a small contingent of distance runners to the Hoosier Open, Dec. 9, where all three Eagles ran in the 5000m. Leading the charge for the Green and White was redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee), who took fifth in 14:01.99. Behind Fink, redshirt juniors Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) and Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) posted personal-best times of 14:14.42 and 14:14.45, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Eagles also had competitors at the Findlay Oiler Opener, Dec. 9-10, down in Findlay, Ohio. There, the squad had six throwers take part in the weight throw, with junior Elijah Albert-Grayer (Canton, Mich. – Salem) posting the team's top finish. The junior took home fourth-place with a toss of 17.51 meters/ 57 feet 5.5-inches. Additionally, sophomore Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio – Madison Comprehensive) qualified into the finals of the 60m hurdles, taking home gold with a personal-best time of 8.13 seconds.
EMU also had a pair of jumpers finish atop the podium, as sophomore Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) won the triple jump with a mark of 14.04 meters/ 46 feet 0.75-inches, while fellow sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) won the high jump with a mark of 1.98 meters/ 6 feet 6-inches. Finally, Eastern also had a pair of student-athletes compete in the heptathlon, with freshman Drew Lament (Lakeview, Ohio – Waynesfield-Goshen) bringing home fifth with a total of 4460 points, while sophomore Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Jerome) was one spot behind in fifth with a career-best 4429 points.
After the opening weekend of the season, all three EMU distance runners sit in the top-10 of the 5000m according to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). Fink currently holds the No. 4 spot, while Bouchikhi and Andresson are No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. Douglas also sits in the top-40 of the 60m hurdles, as he holds the No. 36 spot, while Lament and Jacobs sit No. 33 and No. 36 in the heptathlon, respectively.
