The Eagles will be seeking their 71st consecutive MAC dual win, Jan. 14
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team returns to action for the first time since the New Year this weekend, Jan. 14, when it hosts Ball State University in its first Mid-American Conference dual of the 2016-17 campaign. The Green and White will look for its 71st consecutive MAC dual victory when the two squads compete Saturday in Jones Natatorium.
The Eagles wrapped up the 2016 portion of the slate with a first-place finish at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 2-3. Eastern Michigan ran away with the meet, totaling 1247.5 points to best a field that included Wayne State, Ball State, Ashland, Tiffin, and Wright State. Sophomore Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) paced the Eagles, racking up a team-high 60 points behind three individual wins, three relay victories, and a third-place relay. The Ipswich, England native ultimately earned MAC Swimmer of the Week honors for his incredible performance, becoming the second Eagle to do so this season. Tyson also owns the league's top time in the 100 freestyle this season, while fellow sophomore Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) has clocked in with the MAC's best times in both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
Meanwhile, Ball State travels to Ypsilanti after opening 2017 with a tri-dual against IUPUI and Xavier, Jan. 7. The Cardinals came up empty, falling to IUPUI, 191.5-50.5, and Xavier, 151-76. Freshman Ben Andrew was BSU's top finisher, claiming second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 48.34.
In last season's meeting, EMU came away with a 168-118 win in Muncie, Ind. Nine different Eagles recorded first-place finishes and Eastern won 14-of-16 events en route to the MAC win. Then-freshman Tom Gillis (Hallifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) swept the diving events with a pair of 300+ scores, while then-junior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) added wins in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
