Eagles Prep for First Road Meet of 2017 Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics looks to secure its first win of the season this weekend, heading down to Champaign, Ill. for a quad-meet with Illinois, Rutgers, and UIC, Saturday, Jan. 14. The competition marks the first of six road meets for EMU this season.

Scouting the Competition: Illinois comes into the meet ranked No. 24 following the team's second-place finish at a tri-meet held by Missouri to open the season. The team's best event at this point is far and away beam, where they rank No. 4 in the nation after scoring a 49.250 last week.
Individually, a trio of Illini are tied for No. 13 on beam, as Mary Jane Horth, Brielle Nguyen, and Lizzy Leduc all scored a 9.875 at Mizzou. On vault, three Illini notched a 9.750, while the team's leader on bars was Rae Balthazor and Sarah Lyons, both of whom notched a 9.800. Finally, Nguyen also was the team's top finisher on floor with a score of 9.800.
Rutgers began the season with a second-place finish at a home quad-meet, scoring a 192.875 to open the year at No. 37 in the rankings. The Scarlet Knights' best event so far is vault, where the team scored a 48.500, putting them at No. 34 nationally.
Individually, Claire Jones led the team on vault, scoring a 9.775, while Makenzey Shank notched a 9.750 on bars. Jones was also Rutgers' top competitor on beam, matching her vault score of a 9.775. Finally, on floor, Liby Groden, who scored a 38.825 in the all-around, posted a 9.750.
UIC enters the meet ranked No. 48, scoring a 191.475 in their first action of the season. The team's best event looks to be floor, where they sit at No. 42 with an average score of 48.025.
Mikailla Northern leads the squad, as he was the team's lone all-around competitor in their first meet of the year, scoring a 38.675, including a 9.75 on beam. Nikki Woodruff also chipped in three solid scores on vault, beam, and floor, all scoring a 9.65 or better.
Last Time Against Illinois, Rutgers, and UIC: Most recently, EMU and Illinois squared off in 2009 as part of the Washington Invitational, held in Seattle, Wash. There, the Eagles finished with a team score of 191.475, while Illinois scored a 195.900. Erin Grigg led the Green and White, scoring a 9.8 on floor to finish fifth, in addition to also posting a 9.75 on vault and a 9.625 on bars. Additionally, Maureen Moss had a strong day on beam, scoring a 9.8 to tie for 10th.
Eastern and Rutgers competed against each other much more recently, as the two teams both competed at the Kent State Quad Meet in 2014. There, the Scarlet Knights bested EMU, posting a 195.250 while the Eagles scored a 192.750. Khadijah Hudson had a particularly strong meet, winning floor with a 9.875, while also taking third on vault with a 9.85. The squad also had four competitors take top-10 spots on beam, led by Carrina Lo Bello, who took fifth with a 9.725.
The Eagles and the Flames last met in 2015, as EMU bested UIC, 195.125 - 191.300. Chantelle Loehner had an excellent meet, winning floor with a 9.90, while Rachel Slocum was just behind with a 9.875. Additionally, Anna Willette placed second in the all-around, while also nabbing the silver on vault with a 9.85.
EMU in the Rankings: After the first meet of the season, the Eagles sit at No. 42 in the nation after scoring a 192.050 against Kentucky, Jan. 6. The team's top event ranking is bars, as the Green and White check in at No. 15 with a 48.875. EMU is also in the top-40 on vault, where they rank No. 36. Newcomers in the Lineup: A number of Eagles competed on events for the first time against Kentucky, Jan. 6. Megan Hultgren made her debut on vault, competing a clean yurchenko half to tie for fourth with a 9.675. On beam, Ciara Gresham competed beam for the first time, looking like an experienced veteran and scoring a solid 9.700. Finally, Sydney Audet donned the Green and White for the first time, competing on floor.
Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky.
Eagles on ESPN3: For the second consecutive season, the Eagles will have a pair of home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, the home opener against Kentucky, Jan. 6, will be the first, while the second will be versus Ball State, Feb. 24.
Last Time Out: The Eagles opened the 2017 season with a home meet against Kentucky, Jan. 6, falling to the Wildcats by a final tally of 192.050 - 195.075. EMU started the meet strong on vault and bars, but faltered on beam.
EMU had a whopping five vaulters tie for fourth-place with a 9.675, putting the team's event score at 48.375. Kendall Valentin paced the Green and White on bars, scoring a 9.825 and tying for first-place. Just behind her, Catie Conrad and Natalie Gervais tied for fourth with a 9.800.
Both Conrad and Ciara Gresham posted solid routines on beam, with Conrad tying for third with a 9.750, while Gresham earned a 9.700 in her first beam routine as an Eagle. Finally, Sydney McEachern led the squad on floor, scoring a 9.775 to secure the bronze.
Looking Ahead: After traveling down to Champaign, Ill. for the quad-meet at Illinois, the Eagles stay on the road next week, Friday, Jan. 20, for the Mid-American Conference opener against Central Michigan. Action from Mount Pleasant, Mich. is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
