Eastern Michigan's men's basketball team will begin its sixth season with Rob Murphy as its head coach in 2016-17. The Eagles return the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist), and 2015-16 leading scorer, Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus), to the 2016-17 roster. Thompson, one of just two student-athletes in the MAC to average a double-double a season ago, and Lee, who scored over 15 points per game last year, are a part of a squad which bring back 78.5 percent of its offense from a season ago. At the culmination of the 2015-16 season for EMU, the Eagles fell just two points shy of a semifinal berth, as the No. 1-seeded University of Akron was barely able to edge the Green and White, 65-63, at Quicken Loans Arena in the MAC Tournament.
EMU's women's squad heads into its inaugural season under first-year head coach Fred Castro. Phillis Webb (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo) leads a team which made its way to the 2016 MAC Tournament semifinals and its second-straight Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) a season ago. Webb was the third leading scorer for the Eagles at 11.4 points per game and is joined by fellow returning letterwinners Sasha Dailey (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers), Sheyna Deans (Mt. Clemens, Mich.-Mt. Clemens (St. Clair County C.C.)), Tori Easley (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers) and Micah Robinson (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron) to begin a new era in EMU women's basketball.
