Senior Rachel Washburn recorded her 10th career assist in the match
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A late strike secured a 1-1 draw for the Eastern Michigan University soccer team against the Ramblers of Loyola University Chicago at Scicluna Field Sunday, Sept. 4. Loyola (0-3-2) netted an early goal before the Eagles (1-2-2) buried an equalizer in the 77th minute.
The Green and White put the pressure on the LUC backline early, but the Ramblers' keeper disrupted any of the Eagles' opportunities, keeping the match scoreless. As EMU kept attacking, the Ramblers came back with counters that the Eagles struggled to clear. Loyola pieced together a few opportunities off the Green and White turnovers but the EMU defense forced the shots high and wide.
A foul whistled against the Eagles provided the Ramblers with a free kick just inside of midfield. LUC's Taylor Lambouris delivered a cross into the center of the box where another Loyola player stumbled, creating plenty of commotion. With the ball rattling off of several players, Eleni Carr rocketed the ball into the back of the net, giving LUC a 1-nil edge in the 32nd minute.
In the final 10 minutes of half, the Eagles possessed in their attacking third but could not muster an equalizer.
Returning to the field trailing by one, the Eagles rallied around the aggressive play of senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin). Firing off shot after shot and withstanding each counter by the Ramblers, the Eagles capitalized on a LUC foul in the 77th minute. Senior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) delivered a free kick into the box, where Tillar blasted a shot past the Loyola keeper for the equalizer. Tillar's first goal of the season leveled the score at one and came on Washburn's 10th career assist.
EMU registered three of its 11 second half shots in the final 10 minutes but were unable to put one away, leaving the match even at one at the end of regulation.
In extra time, the Eagles held a 7-2 advantage in shots, highlighted by a last second shot in the second overtime period that was saved.
The Eagles return to the pitch Sunday, Sept. 11, when they play host to the Beavers of Oregon State University. The match is set for 1 p.m.
