Freshman Sabrina McNeill scored her second goal of the season in the loss
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped its fifth consecutive match Friday evening, Sept. 30, at Scicluna Field. The Eagles (2-7-2, 0-3-0 MAC) netted the match's first goal before conceding three unanswered tallies to Ball State University, ultimately falling, 3-1.
The first half featured just five shots, despite a number of solid opportunities by each team. Ball State (8-2-1, 3-0-0 MAC) earned a pair of early corners but the Eagles' defense stood tall and fended off the set pieces.
Controlling the pace of the game after a stout defensive play by junior Chanel Vani (Brampton, Ontario-Cardinal Leger), the Green and White turned to the attack. Vani sent a ball to senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) who delivered a bouncing cross into the 18. Splitting through a pair of BSU defenders, freshman Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) took a touch to break through the backline. Left one-on-one with the Ball State keeper, McNeill maintained composure and hammered home the go-head goal in the 24th minute.
Despite EMU's consistent pressure on the Cardinal defense, Ball State struck with the equalizer in the 34th minute. BSU's Julia Elvbo intercepted an Eagle pass in the midfield, dribbled down the center of the field and ripped a shot from 25 yards out, evening the score at one.
The Cardinals netted the eventual game-winner in the 68th minute after the teams traded possession in the midfield. Cashing in on a set piece, Ball State played the cross to the near post where it was flicked on to the far and deflected in.
Trailing 2-1, the Eagles pressed for the equalizer but EMU's shots were blocked and deflected keeping the one goal deficit intact.
Ball State added an insurance goal in the 78th minute, catching the Eagles on a counter and pushing the score to 3-1 in favor of the visitors. EMU pieced together several chances late but came up empty, falling 3-1.
Next up for the Eagles is a meeting with Miami University, Sunday, Oct. 2. EMU hosts the RedHawks for a 1 p.m. match at Scicluna Field.
