YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After a week away from competition, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team returns to action this Friday, Sept. 30, in South Bend, Ind. at the Notre Dame Invitational. The Eagles will look to follow up their strong competition at the Commodore Classic, Sept. 17, with another strong showing in South Bend.
"This will be another big test for us with a number of ranked teams competing, including the defending NCAA champions, New Mexico," stated Head Coach Sue Parks. "Our goal is to continue to make progress from our last meet, along with keeping the gap tight among our scorers. Our training has gone well, and we're excited to get out there and compete against an elite field."
The Commodore Classic saw Eastern walk away as team champions with 68 points, besting No. 19 Mississippi State and No. 26 Vanderbilt despite tough running conditions due to rain. Due to their performance, the Eagles received votes in the national poll. For her efforts, McDermitt was named the Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week for the second time this season, Sept. 20.
Redshirt sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley), in her second meet, continued her ascent in the cross country realm, running to a ninth-place finish with a time of 17:17.4, which was seven seconds quicker than her first race. Also nabbing a spot in the top-15 was junior Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium – Sportschol KA2), who took 14th after clocking in at 17:28.6.
The Eagles will have their hands full at Notre Dame, as a number of ranked teams will be in attendance, including No. 1 Providence, No. 2 New Mexico, No. 5 NC State, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 24 Vanderbilt, and No. 28 Utah.
