Davis Registers First Career Goal in Soccer's Loss to NIU

The Eagles were held to a season-low five shots in the loss

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team closed out the first weekend of Mid-American Conference play with a 2-1 loss to Northern Illinois, Sunday, Sept. 25. Sophomore Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) netted the first goal of her career in the defeat.

Two offsides calls derailed EMU's (2-6-2, 0-2-0 MAC) best attacking chances early on, leaving the Eagles without a shot through the first 33 minutes of action. Northern Illinois (3-4-2, 2-0-0 MAC) registered three shots over that time span, all of which were saved by sophomore keeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka).

The Green and White garnered its first corner kick in the 33rd minute, sending senior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) to the flag to deliver the cross, but came up empty. The Huskies came right back, earning a corner of their own and capitalized. NIU's Abby Gregg found the back of the net on the set piece, giving NIU a 1-nil lead in the 36th minute.

Eastern Michigan was held without a shot in the first half, leaving the score, 1-0, in favor of the Huskies.

Senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) broke through for a shot in the 52nd minute, which was EMU's first of the match, but the blast was scooped up by NIU's Amy Annala.

EMU had another chance at an equalizer in the 63rd minute, but the play was whistled dead before Washburn's corner service entered the box. Despite the foul, the Eagles locked down the Huskies and intercepted a clearance in the midfield. Playing the ball forward, Davis unleashed a shot, but it was blocked.

Northern Illinois caught the Eagle defense on the counter and pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute.

Back-to-back EMU corners with just under 20 minutes remaining resulted in just one shot, a strike by freshman Maggie McCullough (London, Ontario-Oakridge Secondary) that was saved.

Over the next 18 minutes, the two teams combined for just one shot as the score remained 2-nil, despite a solid scoring chance by Tillar.

The Eagles broke the shutout in the 90th minute when Tillar found Davis for the first goal of her career to pull the Green and White within one. Fighting through plenty of commotion in the box, Davis got her boot on the end of the cross and hit it up and over the NIU keeper. Davis' goal stood as the lone strike for the Eagles, as NIU claimed the match, 2-1.

Conference play continues next weekend, Sept. 30 - Oct. 2, when the Eagles play host to Ball State University and Miami University. Eastern begins the weekend with a 5 p.m. clash against the Cardinals, before taking on the RedHawks in a cross-divisional clash Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m.
