Sophomore Kaylin Williams made a season-high eight saves in the loss
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A sloppy second half plagued the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team in its Mid-American Conference opener Friday evening, Sept. 23, against Western Michigan University. The Eagles (2-5-2, 0-1-0 MAC) gave up a season-high five goals, all of which came in the second half, as EMU dropped the match, 5-0.
Senior Madison Hirsch (Troy, MIch.-Troy) recorded the Eagles' lone shot in the first half, sending a header on frame in the sixth minute. The quick flick on by Hirsch was saved by the WMU keeper and stood as the only scoring chance for the Eagles in the first 45 minutes of play.
Meanwhile, Western Michigan (7-2-0, 1-0-0 MAC) rattled off five shots, four of which were on target. In addition to a 5-1 edge in shots, the Broncos held a 2-0 advantage in corners, and were whistled offsides three times, compared to EMU's one offsides call.
Coming out of the break with the match scoreless, a 13-minute span early in the second half determined the Eagles fate. Western Michigan broke through with a goal in the 48th minute before adding scores in the 59th and 62nd minutes to take a 3-0 lead.
Trailing in the match, the Eagles pressed for a goal, hoping to fight their way back into the match. Despite 10 second half shots, EMU came up empty, and gave up a pair of late tallies on counters. The Broncos ultimately took the match, 5-0, after scoring goals in the 89th and 90th minutes.
Eastern rounds out a weekend road trip Sunday, Sept. 25, in DeKalb, Ill. There, the Green and White will take on the Huskies of Northern Illinois University at 2 p.m.
