After a busy weekend of cross country action, both the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's cross country and track and field teams volunteered their mornings at the JDRF One Walk, held Sept. 18 in Dexter, Mich. at Hudson Mills Metropark.

In total, the event raised a total of $572,844.63 for the fight against Type 1 diabetes. The Eagles have been volunteering at the event for a number of years.

Women's Head Coach Sue Parks' family has been involved with the walk for a long time, as her sister actually helped start the event many years ago. She has a personal connection to the walk, as her niece is a diabetic and her late brother, Steve Parks, passed away suddenly in 2012 from complications associated with the disease.

Men's Head Coach John Goodridge has also been a strong supporter of the event, as a large group of his squad is always in attendance to assist in any way necessary.

JDRF One Walk has a single goal: creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.

If you have T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin from a pump and carefully monitor your eating and activity every single day.

All of the money raised at the JDRF One Walk supports JDRF, which is the leading global organization funding T1D research. For more information on the organization, please click here.

Both cross country teams will be competition free this upcoming weekend. The following weekend, both squads will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational, Sept. 30.
