Eastern Takes Second in a Row at Charleston Classic

The Eagles knocked off VCU in four sets
CHARLESTON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – In the second day of the 2016 College of Charleston Classic, the Eastern Michigan University won its second-straight match with a victory over Virginia Commonwealth University Saturday, Sept. 10. The Eagles (4-5) took down the Rams (3-6) in four sets, 25-19, 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, at TD Arena.
The Eagles spread out the offensive firepower in the match with Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) and Alysa Sutton (Gaston, Ind.-Wes-Del) leading the way. Murray finished the match with 12 kills, while Sutton added a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) handled the setting duties for EMU, stuffing the stat sheet with 38 assists, six kills, three block assists and one solo stuff. Additionally, Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch Community) contributed eight kills, while Rachel Irbe (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) added another seven. Mary Helen Beacom (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove North) paced the defense with 18 digs, while four other Eagles added double-digit dig numbers. Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) picked up 16 digs from the back row, while Sutton added 13, Rajewski had 12 and Irbe notched 10.
The Eagles' defense was stifling in the opening set, as the Green and White cruised to a 1-0 lead with the 25-19 set victory. EMU held VCU to a .056 attack percentage, while digging 19 of the Rams' attack attempts. Offensively, the Eagles hit at a .222 clip, and spread the wealth. Five student-athletes posted two-or-more digs with Sutton netting three.
Eastern continued its dominance in the second set, hitting .385, going 14-of-26 with just four errors at the net. EMU downed Virginia Commonwealth, 25-16, to jump on top, 2-0. Six Eagles got in on the offensive action as Falco and Murray each contributed three kills, while Ferguson, Irbe, Rajewski and Sutton posted a pair of kills apiece.
The Rams were able to tame Eastern's offense in set three, holding the Eagles to a .111 attack percentage. Murray was able to grab four kills and Irbe added three but VCU managed to take down the Green and White by scoring five points in a row to close out a 26-24 EMU setback.
Murray and Sutton closed out the final set strong for Eastern with four kills apiece as Rajewski picked up 12 of her assists in the 25-23 set win. EMU hit .171 in the set but was able to hold the Rams to a .136 attack percentage and hold on to its second straight win.
Eastern looks to sweep the Classic Saturday evening when the Eagles hit the hardwood to square off with the host school College of Charleston. The Green and White will square off with the Cougars at 7 p.m.
