The Eagles posted a 2-2 record at the CofC Classic
CHARLESTON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team wrapped up play at the College of Charleston Classic Saturday night, Sept. 10. Facing off against tournament host CofC (6-3), the Eagles (4-6) dropped a four-set match, 11-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-25.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by senior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) and junior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont). Murray finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Ferguson added 10, as the only two Eagles to post double-digit kills. Junior Sam Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch) chipped in a career-high eight kills, while freshman Alysa Sutton (Gaston, Ind.-West-Del) finished with seven. Redshirt sophomore Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) posted a double-double, finishing with 38 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) led the defensive effort for Eastern Michigan, registering a career-high tying 21 digs.
An early start faded in the opening set, as the Green and White hit at a .125 clip, while allowing CofC to hit .429. Ferguson was the leader for Eagles offensively, totaling three kills on seven attempts, while Irbe added six digs in the set.
The Eagles prevailed in an offensive onslaught in the second set, as the Green and White boasted a .378 hitting percentage. With her team trailing, 15-13, EMU Head Coach Kimi Olson used a timeout. Out of the break in action, Ferguson pounded down a kill to pull the Eagles within one. From there, EMU rallied to tie the score at 20 before a kill by Sutton and a CofC error put Eastern in front, 22-20, bringing about a timeout by the Cougars. Charleston earned a point out of the timeout but a kill by Rajewski pushed EMU's lead back to two and a kill by sophomore Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) ended the set, 25-22, in favor of the Eagles.
With the match level at one, late errors on the attack plagued the Eagles, allowing CofC to claim the set, 25-17 before handing EMU a loss with a 25-15 setback in set four.
With the 3-1 loss, Eastern Michigan closes out the College of Charleston Classic with a 2-1 record. Additionally, Murray and Ferguson earned CofC Classic All-Tournament honors for their performances over the weekend.
The Eagles return home next weekend, Sept. 17-18, to take part in the Michigan Challenge. The Green and White open the weekend in Ann Arbor against co-host Michigan, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. before hosting Auburn at the Convocation Center in the night cap at 7 p.m.
