TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Former Eastern Michigan University baseball pitcher Augie Gallardo has signed a professional contract and will join the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League today, August 9.

Gallardo wrapped up his two-year EMU career this past season after transferring from Mt. San Jacinto College prior to the 2015 campaign.  He had his best season as an Eagle in 2016, making 14 starts as part of the weekend rotation, tallying four wins.  In 75.1 innings, he struck out a team-high 74 batters while finishing with a 4.18 ERA, third-best on the team.  The 74 K's was also sixth-best in the Mid-American Conference.

His final EMU appearance came in the MAC Tournament, where Gallardo pitched one of the best games of his career in a 6-1 win over Toledo, May 27.  The right-hander tossed his first career complete game, while only allowing one run on five hits, striking out six.  The performance pushed Eastern into the semifinals the next day against Kent State.  For his efforts he was named to the MAC All-Tournament team.

The Hemet, Calif. native wrapped up his EMU career with 121.1 innings in 31 appearances, including 19 starts.  He collected five career wins and struck out 105 batters.

"I am thankful for the opportunity that the Beach Bums have given me," Gallardo said.  "I'm ready to start my professional career and I'm excited to see where it takes me."

The Beach Bums compete in the East Division of the Frontier League, which is an independent league not affiliated with Major League Baseball.  They play their home games at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, Mich.

Gallardo is set to make his first appearance in a start this Thursday, August 11, at home against the Windy City Thunderbolts.  First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
