Trio of Sports Post MAC's Best GPAs in 2015-16

Football, women's soccer, and men's golf led their respective sports in the classroom this past year
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics had three of its teams recognized for its conference-leading success in the classroom. The EMU football, women's soccer, and men's golf programs each led the Mid-American Conference in team grade point average in their respective sports for the 2015-16 academic year.
"We aspire for excellence in the classroom and our student-athletes continue to impress us with their ability to balance the demands of academics and athletics," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "We are definitely proud to say we lead the conference academically in these three sports. It is a tribute to our student-athletes' commitment and our staff and coaches' support of their academic pursuits."
Football posted the top GPA in the league for the second consecutive season, holding a 2.90 team mark, while men's golf topped the conference with a 3.57 GPA. On the women's side, soccer owned the highest GPA of the three EMU programs honored, boasting a 3.595 team GPA to claim the top spot in the MAC.
"Our student-athletes have been working hard this year and it shows with the achievements of these three teams," added Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services Dr. Talea Drummer. "It is exciting to see them succeed and be the definition of a student-athlete. We are looking forward to what the 2016-17 academic year will bring!"
As a department, the 2015-16 academic year was a successful one for the Green and White as 355 student-athletes posted GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Additionally, 81 student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs for the academic year and 74 Eagles were named MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes.
