The Eagles fell to 0-2-1 with the loss
ST. PAUL, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – Closing out the weekend against No. 17 Minnesota, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team dropped a 3-nil match to the Gophers (4-0-0). Sophomore goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made four saves in the loss.
The Eagles spent much of the first half in their defensive third as Minnesota maintained constant pressure on the EMU back line. A close call in the eighth minute pinged off the post before the Gophers gained a 1-nil advantage in the 12th minute. After a Minnesota midfielder collided with an Eagle, a cross to the back post was headed into the back of the net, giving EMU a 1-0 deficit.
EMU came right back as a solid play in the midfield led to a chance for senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland). Corralling a ball played over the top, Rollins took her mark on. Crossing her defender, Rollins pulled it back to the top of the 18 and ripped a shot right at the keeper.
After withstanding more pressure from the Gophers, the Eagles saw their deficit move to two goals after a cross was volleyed into the upper corner by a UM striker.
Trailing 2-nil, the Eagles turned to a few substitutions for a spark. Freshmen Sabrina McNeil (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) and Maggie McCullough (London, Ontario-Oakridge) and redshirt freshman Mia Colavito (Mississauga, Ontario-Loyola Catholic) entered the match and immediately turned the table on Minnesota. After applying pressure and cutting off passes in the midfield, the Eagles pieced together a pair of chances but could not find the back of the net.
Coming out of the break, the Green and White took it right at the Gophers, manufacturing a few promising chances but were unable to net a goal as McNeil and Rollins each put shots high and wide of goal.
Minnesota added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, sending the Eagles home with a 3-nil loss.
The Green and White close out its road trip Friday, Sept. 2, in Green Bay, Wis. where the Eagles will take on the Phoenix of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
