The Eagles were outshot, 19-2, in the contest
MINNEAPOLIS (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team opened a three-game road trip Friday, Aug. 26, against the University of Iowa at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. An early goal by the Hawkeyes (1-1-0) and a 19-2 shot differential clipped the Eagles (0-1-1), 1-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made a season-high six saves in the loss.
Iowa pressured the Eagles' back line early and often, eventually taking an early lead in the eighth minute. After breaking through on a run, the Hawkeyes played a ball from the end line to the edge of the six where UI tapped it in for a 1-nil lead.
The Green and White pieced together a few chances in the first half but only fired off one shot. Meanwhile, Iowa kept the pressure on EMU's defense but the Eagles withstood a 10-1 shot differential to head to the break trailing 1-nil.
In the second half, the Eagles came out hungry for an equalizer. In the 51st minute, senior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) ripped a shot from outside the 18 but the Iowa goalkeeper was up to the task. Freshman Sabrina McNeil (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) and redshirt senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) generated several more opportunities for the Green and White in the next few minutes but the Eagles came up empty.
While the Eagles pounded away at the Iowa back line, Williams held off the Hawkeye strikers.
Iowa knocked on the doorstep several times in the final 20 minutes but Williams came up with save after save to keep her team within a goal. Unfortunately, despite a few strong efforts in the attacking third, the Green and White failed to find the back of net, falling 1-0.
EMU returns to action Sunday, Aug. 28, against the University of Minnesota. The match versus the Golden Gophers is set for 2 p.m. (EST).
