Baseball Announces Four More Signees for 2017

They join the seven recruits that signed in November

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team has announced four additional signees to the program today, Aug. 26, that will join the team this upcoming 2017 season.  Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)), Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)), Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) have signed their letters of intent to join the Eagles.

The four newcomers join the seven signed back in November, Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne), John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), Riley McManus (Warren, Mich.- Parkway Christian), Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), and Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community).


Brad Allen    RHP    R/R    5-11    190    Jr.    Manchester, Mich.-Manchester-Jackson College

JACKSON COLLEGE: Spent his first two seasons at Jackson College...Played under head coach Rick Smith as a Jet...Made five starts in 10 appearances in 2016...Pitched to a 3.88 ERA in 53.1 innings, tallying an 8-1 record with two complete games and 56 strikeouts...Tossed a no hitter against Kellogg C.C., racking up 11K's...Helped his team to a 37-14 record and a conference championship...HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Manchester High School and played under head coach Corey Fether as a Flying Dutchman...Was a three-year letterwinner and two-time captain...Holds his schools records for strikeouts in a game (18), single season batting average, single season stolen bases, and single season triples...Was named all-conference, all-district, and all-regional all three years...PERSONAL: Full name: Bradley Stephen Allen...Son of Stephen and Lynne Allen...Has one brother, Michael, and one sister, Alisha...Major: Sport management.

"Allen is a strong armed right handed pitcher who should step in immediately and be able to make an impact," EMU Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde said.  "He is a hard nosed kid and a tough competitor who really blossomed under Rick Smith at Jackson C.C."

Justin McMurtrey    RHP    R/R    6-3    215    Jr.    Redding, Calif.-Shasta-Butte Community College

BUTTE C.C.: Spent his first two seasons at Butte Community College...Played under head coach Anthony Ferro as a Roadrunner...Was named first-team all-conference and to the academic all-state team while at Butte...Helped his team to a Golden Valley Conference championship in 2016...HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Shasta High School and played under head coach Jim Morley as a Wolf...Pitched to an 8-1 record and a 2.33 ERA with 60 K's his senior season...Named first-team by the Redding Record Searchlight...Helped his team to a sectional championship...Also lettered in basketball and football...PERSONAL: Full name: Justin Carl McMurtrey...Son of Mark and Jodi McMurtrey...Has one brother, Andrew...Major: Communication.

"McMurtrey should also be able to pitch a lot of innings for us this year," Van Ameyde stated.  "He had a terrific two years at Butte in California for coach Anthony Ferro.  He is a strike thrower who had an outstanding K/BB ratio the last two years, and he throws from multiple angles.  I'm really excited to add him to the staff."

Mike Monahan    C    L/R    6-2    195    Fr.    Saline, Mich.-Saline

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Saline High School and played under head coach Scott Theisen as a Hornet...Was a two-time letterwinner...Batted .270 his senior year, including .357 with runners in scoring position...Helped his team to two conference titles, two district titles, a regional title and a state championship appearance his senior season...His teams had a two-year record of 70-10...Individually he was a two-time all-conference academic team member and a four-time academic honor roll honoree...Also lettered in football...PERSONAL: Full name: Michael Paul Monahan...Son of Mark and Michelle Monahan...Has one brother, Matthew, and one sister, Mickaley...Major: Undecided.

"Mike comes from an excellent program at Saline and has been around a lot of winning," Van Ameyde said.  "We feel he can bring that attitude and energy to our program.  "He is a left handed hitter who has the ability to drive the ball with power to all fields.  He'll have an opportunity early in his career to compete for at bats and time behind the plate."

Jeff Timko    C/OF    R/R    6-1    205    Fr.    Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Brother Rice High School and played under head coach Bob Riker as a Warrior...Was a four-time letterwinner and one-time captain...Batted .464 with 52 hits his senior season, as well as an OPS of 1.179 with 27 walks and 18 stolen bases...Named all-conference, all-district, all-region, and all-state his senior season...Helped his team to four conference titles, two district championships and a regional title...Also lettered three seasons in football...PERSONAL: Full name: Jeffrey William Timko...Son of John and Angie Timko...Has two sisters, Taylor and Mary...Major: Undecided.

"Jeff is a big, physical kid who has a lot of thump in the bat and can run really well for a kid his size," Van Ameyde declared.  "He was a two-sport star at Brother Rice for coach Bob Riker.  The sky is the limit with Jeff, we're really looking forward to him concentrating on baseball and providing a big bat in the middle of our lineup."
