YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team opened the 2016 season at home Sunday, Aug. 21, against the Bulldogs of Butler University. The two squads played through 110 minutes of action, eventually drawing 0-0.
Sophomore Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) recorded five saves in the match, while freshman Sabrina McNeil (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) tallied three shots, two of which were on frame.
BU (1-0-1) earned a dangerous opportunity early, garnering an indirect free kick at the edge of the six. As the Eagles (0-0-1) stood side-by-side on the goal line, Butler's Serina Kashimoto's quick touch was followed by a shot that was blocked senior Stef Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) and cleared.
The Bulldogs came roaring back in the 23rd minute, but Williams stood strong. A BU striker ripped a shot through traffic to the far post but a full-extension dive by Williams maintained the scoreless tie.
A free kick provided Eastern Michigan with a chance in the 87th minute as McNeil connected with a cross but BU's keeper corralled the header for the save. The close call for the Eagles proved to be the final chance for either squad as the teams headed to extra time.
Heading into overtime looking for the golden goal, the Green and White kept the pressure on the Bulldogs' defense. In the first extra time period, EMU held BU without a shot, but only mustered one itself, forcing a second period.
In the final 10 minutes of action, EMU rattled off three shots but failed to find the back of the net, resulting in a scoreless draw.
The Eagles now travel to Minneapolis, Minn., Aug. 26-28, for a pair of matches against Big Ten Conference opponents. EMU opens the weekend Friday, Aug. 26, against University of Iowa, before taking on University of Minnesota, Aug. 28. The match with the Hawkeyes is set for 4:30 p.m.
