The 2015 MAC Champions will be led by a trio of expereinced harriers
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University women's cross country head coach Sue Parks announced today, August 16, that the Eagles have selected their team captains for the upcoming 2016 season. This year, the Eagles will be led by redshirt seniors Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. - Fremont) and Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - University of Leuven), and junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison).
"These three athletes are outstanding representatives of our program," stated Parks. "They all lead in their own way through their work ethic, attitude, and competitive spirit. Anna, Sofie, and Jordann are great choices to lead our team to a successful season. I am really proud of them, and I know that they work their very hardest to try to help the team achieve our goals."
Aldrich, who was also a team captain last year, ran in a total of five races last season, including the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 31, where she crossed the finish line with a time of 23:36.83. She was also named a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete for her success both on athletically and academically.
When describing Aldrich, Parks explained that "Anna is one who has dealt with adversity throughout her career at EMU, but regardless of the battles she has encountered, she has remained completely committed to helping the team achieve success."
Gallein followed up her first season at EMU in 2014 with an even better year in 2015, culminating in a 34th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 13. At the MAC Championships, Gallein finished an impressive sixth with a time of 21:09.80, which was good enough for First Team All-MAC honors.
"Sofie is one who is always supportive of her teammates and who always has her best competitive efforts for the team when it really counts," explained Parks.
Like Gallein, McDermitt built on her freshman season success, as she placed 19th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional as a sophomore after clocking in at 21:01.00 to earn All-Region honors. Additionally, she was also named All-MAC First Team after taking fourth at the conference championships with a time of 20:53.62.
Parks had praise for McDermitt as well, saying "Jordann is such a positive person day in and day out, and no one will ever outwork her. She is a great competitor as well."
The Green and White will begin their 2016 season on the road at the George Dales Invitational, Friday, Sept. 2, in Kalamazoo, Mich. The team will look to defend their first-ever MAC title later in the season at the MAC Championships, Oct. 29, in Kent, Ohio.
