YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After qualifying to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games last month, Eastern Michigan University men's track and field alumnus Eric Alejandro ('08) is set to begin competition in his second Olympics next week, August 15.
Alejandro, who will be representing Puerto Rico in Rio, will compete in the 400m hurdles, which begins Monday at 10:35 am ET with the first heat of round one. For a complete schedule of Monday, August 15, click here.
If he were to advance to the semifinals, the second round would take place Tuesday, August 16, beginning at 8:35 pm ET. To cap off the event, the finals will occur Thursday, August 18, at 11 am ET.
This marks the second time that the EMU alumnus will be competing in the Olympics, as he also qualified to the 2012 Games in London. There, Alejandro made it all the way to the semifinals before being eliminated. This time around, the Pembrooke Pines, Fla. native punched his ticket to Rio after clocking in with a time of 49.16 seconds, which was just .01 seconds behind his time in the London semifinals.
The EMU men's and women's track and field programs have combined to have a representative at each Olympic Games since 1960, totaling an impressive 14 straight Olympics. With Alejandro competing next week, that figure increases to 15 consecutive Olympic Games. On the men's side, a total of six medals have been won, four of them being gold.
Alejandro, and the rest of the 400m hurdles field, can be viewed live online through NBC. To view the stream, click here.
