Simmons Finishes Sixth at U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – The decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Trials came to a close today, July 3, in Eugene, Oregon. Representing the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team was recent graduate Solomon Simmons, who finished an impressive sixth amongst the top decathletes in the nation after amassing a total of 7829 points.
Beginning day two with the 110m hurdles Simmons finished within the top-five, nabbing fifth after posting a time of 14.18 seconds, which narrowly surpassed his collegiate career-best. He then continued the trend at the discus throw, taking home a fourth-place finish after posting a mark of 45.45 meters/ 149 feet 1.25-inches, which was also a personal-best.
Moving to the pole vault, Simmons then finished 13th, notching a mark of 4.45 meters/ 14 feet 7.25-inches. The javelin throw saw the recent EMU graduate nab another fifth-place finish after posting a mark of 57.83 meters/ 189 feet 8-inches. Capping off the grueling ten events, Simmons finished ninth in the 1500m run, clocking in at 4:46.37. Ultimately, Simmons finished in sixth-place with a total of 7829 points.
The next Eagle to compete in an Olympic Trials event will be Donald Scott, who will take part in the qualifying round of the triple jump on July 7 at 4:45 p.m. pacific time.
