Simmons Wraps Up Day One at Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team was represented today, July 2, at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Recent graduate Solomon Simmons took part in the first half of the decathlon, finishing the day 12th with 4010 points.
Simmons got off to a solid start, turning in a ninth-place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 10.79 seconds. Moving to the long jump, he then notched a jump of 6.86 meters/ 22 feet 6-inches to place 16th.
The recent graduate's top finish of the day then came in the shot put, where he nabbed fourth-place after posting a throw of 14.91 meters/ 48 feet 11-inches. The high jump then saw Simmons finish 13th with a jump of 1.88 meters/ 6 feet 2-inches, which was just .03 meters off of his collegiate-best.
Finally, he wrapped up the first day with the 400m dash, finishing second in his heat and eighth overall with a time of 49.44 seconds. Heading into day two, Simmons finished 12th after amassing a total of 4010 points.
Simmons will wrap up the decathlon tomorrow, July 3, beginning at 10 a.m. pacific time with the 110m hurdles.
