Vangoss joins the staff after four years as head coach at Austin College
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Andrea Vangoss, the head coach of Austin College's softball team for the past four seasons, has been named an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University, Head Coach Melissa Gentile announced today, July 19.
"I am excited to welcome Andrea to the Eagle softball family and look for her to make an impact right away," Gentile said. "She has been a very successful head coach, brings a strong work ethic, knowledge of all facets of the game, and a passion to continually grow and challenge herself. She will work primarily with our pitchers and will also take over as our recruiting coordinator."
In her new role, Vangoss will serve as EMU's primary pitching coach, while also taking over the role of recruiting coordinator. She inherits a squad that features three hurlers who set career-highs in strikeouts and career-lows in earned run average a season ago.
A native of Dearborn Heights, Mich., Vangoss comes to Ypsilanti after a four-year stint guiding the Roos. In addition to leading the softball program at Austin College, a NCAA Division III institution, Vangoss served as a Recreation Sports Supervisor and Adjunct Professor. In her four years in charge of the Roos, Vangoss coached 20 All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honorees and one all-region selection, while compiling the best winning percentage in program history.
Prior to her time in Texas, Vangoss was a graduate assistant coach at nearby Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Mich. There, she directed camps and clinics, while also helping with the day-to-day responsibilities. She also spent time as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she oversaw the pitching staff.
Her coaching experience reaches outside the collegiate ranks, having spent six seasons (2005-11) at the high school level, serving as an assistant coach at Riverview High School in Riverview, Mich.
A 2009 graduate of Adrian College, Vangoss was a two-year starter for the Bulldogs in the circle after spending her first two collegiate seasons at Macomb Community College. At MCC, Vangoss fueled MCC to the NJCAA State Championship. A strong hurler for both teams, Vangoss finished her career with five one-hitters and two no-hit performances.
Vangoss holds a bachelor's degree in education from Adrian College and a master's degree in educational leadership from Concordia University (Mich.).
