Simmons Nabs All-American Honors at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com) – Following up his solid first day of competition, redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley) of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team claimed sixth in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 9. The redshirt senior capped off his fantastic EMU career by earning First Team All-American honors after setting a program record with a total of 7,936 points.
"What a great competitive effort for Solomon," exclaimed Head Coach John Goodridge. "He has overcome so many physical obstacles throughout his career, including the past three weeks, but he battled like a champion today right to the very last meters of the 1,500. He is an Eastern great. I also want to congratulate Assistant Coach Steve Manz, who did a fantastic coaching job with Solomon."
Beginning with the 110m hurdles, Simmons took part in the quickest heat, finishing third in both his heat, as well as overall. Specifically, the redshirt senior clocked in with a personal-best time of 14.21 seconds to nab 948 points on the first event. From there, he traveled to the discus throw, notching another solid showing with a throw of 42 meters/ 137 feet 9-inches, which was good for seventh. The pole vault saw Simmons nab another personal-best with a mark of 4.70 meters/ 15 feet 5-inches, placing ninth.
The Murrieta, Calif. native posted his second-highest finish on the day in the javelin, notching a throw of 59.45 meters/ 195 feet to pick up 730 points heading into the final event. Concluding the decathlon, Simmons took 12th in the 1,500m run, crossing the finish line in 4:40.46, which was another personal-best. Ultimately, Simmons finished the decathlon with a total of 7,936 points, which was good for First Team All-American honors, along with a new program record in the event.
This marks the end to the team's 2016 outdoor campaign, which featured a number of fantastic performances. The Eagles will now begin preparing for next year's cross country and indoor seasons, which will begin next fall.
