YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After taking home the Mid-American Conference Triple Crown by winning the outdoor title, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will wrap up their 2016 campaign with the NCAA Championships this week, June 8-11. The Eagles had a trio of athletes qualify to compete in two different events throughout the four-day meet.

The first Eagle to qualify to the meet was senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium – University of Leuven) in the 3000m steeplechase. Gallein had a fantastic race at the NCAA East Regional, winning her heat and earning the No. 4 seed with a time of 9:58.61. Unfortunately, Gallein will not be making the trip to Eugene, as she was forced to bow out due to personal reasons.

"Sofie was ready for a great race in Eugene, but unfortunately, it was necessary for her to withdraw from the race and return home as soon as possible," explained Head Coach Sue Parks. "We are both disappointed that she won't get the chance to compete, but no one race is more important than family and we support her decision.  She had a tremendous year and we're very proud of her accomplishments."

The 5000m run will see a pair of runners compete for the national championship, as both sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) and junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) qualified into the meet. McDermitt secured the No. 14 seed at the NCAA East Regional, posting a time of 16:13.61. Bogdanova was just behind her, crossing the finish line in 16:16.13 to nab the No. 17 seed.

"This is the first trip to NCAA's for both of them, and after six MAC individual championships between the two of them during the year, I'm excited to see what they can do in Eugene," remarked Parks. "This is an exciting opportunity for two tough competitors who have put out so much for the team. They have worked closely together throughout this year, and it's nice to see them compete in the same race on the biggest stage. I'm looking forward to seeing them finish their season strong."

McDermitt and Bogdanova will run the final race of the season for EMU on the last day of competition, June 11, at 5:25 p.m.
