Junior backstroke specialist Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), current member of the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team, continued to impress at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Thursday, June 30, advancing to the semifinals later tonight with an 18th-place finish in the 200 backstroke.

Placing second in his heat, Bateman initially just missed a semi-finals qualifying spot with the 18th-place finish, with a converted time of 1:46.93, but advanced to the race tonight after a pair of other swimmers dropped out.  Building off of his sweep of the backstroke events at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships, Bateman's 18th-place finish today and his 33rd-place finish in the 100 back earlier this week have been the top finishes by an Eagle at the trials.

Bateman's semifinal race will begin tonight at 6:45 p.m.  Eastern Michigan then closes out the trials tomorrow when junior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa-Moon Area) competes in the 200 back. Prelims are set to begin at 11 a.m., Friday, July 1.
