CLOVIS, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team was represented by freshman Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland) yesterday, June 24, at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships, held in Clovis, Calif.
Ziegenfuss, who competed in the javelin throw, had a solid day of competition, ultimately finishing fourth in a field of 15 athletes with a mark of 60.75 meters/ 199 feet 4-inches. The Allentown, Pa. native just missed out on a berth to the 2016 IAAF World Junior Championships, as he was only two spots away, with the two highest-placing competitors who have met the IAAF standard in each event being selected for the USA National Team.
The freshman wrapped up a fantastic debut campaign for the Eagles last month at the NCAA East Regional, May 26-28, placing 26th in the nation with a throw of 62.77 meters/ 205 feet 11-inches. Before that, however, Ziegenfuss won the Mid-American Conference title with a program-best mark of 67.44 meters/ 221 feet 3-inches, which was good for both First Team All-MAC and MAC Freshman Field Performer of the Year honors.
