14 Eagles Named to CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams

Three Eagles were named CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team
NORFOLK, Va. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving teams had a combined 12 student-athletes recognized as College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-Americans, the organization announced today, June 22. Eight members of the men's swimming and diving team were honored, while four earned the distinction on the women's side. Of EMU's 14 awardwinners, 11 were named honorable mention, while senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston), freshman Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel), and freshman Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) were named to the first team.
To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at their respective diving qualifying meets.
Making the 853-person list for the Eagles were: Henry, Gillis, sophomore Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), senior Erik Gissen (Karlstad Sweden, Alvkullegymnasiet), senior Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson), freshman Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary), sophomore Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central), freshman Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate), senior Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel), junior Carly Jackson (LaPorte, Ind.-LaPorte), junior Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central), sophomore Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser), junior Alexis Mitcheltree, (Moon Twp., Pa-Moon Area), and Duncan.
Henry reeled in first team honors after turning in a sensational senior campaign that etched his name in EMU laurels. A construction management major with a 3.78 GPA, Henry served as a captain for the Green and White. During the season Henry went a perfect 6-for-6 in the 100 freestyle, while never finishing lower than second in the 200 frees. In addition to sweeping the 100 and 200 free at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Henry swam on two of EMU's champion relays, ultimately earning MAC Outstanding Swimmer of the Year honors for his efforts. The Garner, N.C. product finishes his career atop the EMU record books in the 100 free, 200 free, and the 200 Individual Medley. A First Team All-MAC honoree, Henry was a two-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week selection, as well as a two-time MAC Swimmer of the Week awardwinner. Henry's stellar career came to a close at the NCAA Championships where he posted a 22nd-place finish in the 100 free, the best finish by an Eagle in the event in more than 25 years.
In his first collegiate diving season, Gillis proved to be one of EMU's top divers over the course of the year, while maintaining a 3.61 GPA. Gillis competed on the springboard eight times in his freshman season, compiling seven top-three finishes. Gillis broke the 300-point barrier on seven occasions, including a career-high score of 333.98 en route to a first-place finish versus Ball State. A pair of top-five finishes at the MAC Championships earned Gillis MAC Freshman Diver of the Year honors. After taking eighth-place on the 3-meter at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, Gillis earned a trip to the NCAA Championships where he wrapped up his season with a 43rd-place mark of 308.60.
A First Team All-MAC selection carrying a 3.64 GPA in history, Burton's sensational sophomore season was highlighted by three top-six finishes at the MAC Championships. Burton claimed sixth in the 100 Butterfly and fifth in the 100 Backstroke before touching in with the program's second-fastest time in the 200 Butterfly. Clocking in at 1:46.73, Burton reeled in a second-place finish with a time that ranks second in EMU laurels. The sophomore freestyle specialist also played a vital role in EMU's relay success. Burton swam the third leg of EMU's record breaking MAC Championship 800 Free Relay, as well as a leg of the Eagles' conference winning 400 Free Relay.
A mechanical engineering technology major, Gissen carries a 3.56 GPA. Competing in nine meets for the Eagles, Gissen posted 11 top-three finishes. At the MAC Championships, the Karlstad, Sweden native claimed second-place in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, while also serving as a crucial member of EMU's relay success. Swimming the second leg of EMU's 400 freestyle relay, Gissen helped the Eagles to a first-place finish, as well as school, pool, meet, and conference records with a time of 2:55.23.
An accounting major, Hodges boasted a GPA of 3.86. During the regular season, Hodges finished no lower than second in either the 100 or 200 Breaststroke, highlighted by five consecutive wins in the 200 Breaststroke. At the MAC Championships, Hodges reeled in a seventh-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke and nabbed 10th in the 100 Breaststroke.
Kawaguchi swam in six meets for the Eagles in his first season at EMU. A biology major with a 3.50 GPA, Kawaguchi won two events in his collegiate debut, claiming first in the 100 and 200 backstroke against Northwestern, Oct. 15. Reeling in 10 top-three finishes over the course of the season, Kawaguchi won the 400 IM at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5. Following a 13th-place finish in the 400 IM, taking seventh in the 100 back, and a third-place time in the 200 back at the MAC Championships, Kawaguchi was named Second Team All-MAC.
One of four divers making the list for the Green and White, Rusenas holds a 3.97 GPA in accounting. The Naperville, Ill. native finished third on the 1-meter and fourth on the 3-meter at the MAC Championships, ultimately being named Second Team All-MAC. He registered one first-place finish during the season, taking the top spot versus Wayne State with a score of 356.63 on the 3-meter.
Tyson, a exercise science major with a 3.94 GPA, swam in eight meets for the Eagles as a freshman. He recorded his first career win at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5, in the 200 IM and finished seventh in the 200 IM at the MAC Championships with a career-best time of 1:48.65, the fourth-fastest time in EMU laurels. Tyson also claimed third in the 200 free with a personal-best time of 1:35.57, the second-fastest time in EMU annals and placed fifth in the 100 free with a time of 44.45 at the MAC Championships, the sixth-fastest time in EMU history. The Ipswich, England product swam anchor on EMU's record-breaking 400 and 800 Free Relays that won the MAC Championship with school, pool, meet, and conference record times of 2:55.23 and 6:25.55, respectively., as a Second Team All-MAC honoree.
Detro garners the academic distinction after an incredible performance at the conference meet. Swimming legs of three different relays, Detro finished runner-up in the 500 Freestyle with the third fastest time in the MAC this season before winning the 200 Free title. Touching in with a time of 1:47.39, Detro clocked in with the top time in the league. A speech language pathology major with a 3.50 GPA, Detro was named First Team All-MAC.
Jackson lands on the team after three top-10 finishes at the MAC Championships, carrying a 3.55 GPA as a biology major. The LaPorte, Ind. product registered fifth-place finishes in both the 200 fly and 500 free, as well as winning the 100 Fly Consolation Final. Additionally, Jackson swam a leg of the Eagles' school record-breaking 400 Medley Relay that claimed the MAC title.
A second team All-MAC selection, Van Allen adds another award to a stellar junior season. The Indianapolis, Ind. native was named MAC Swimmer of the Week two times throughout the season. A communication major with a 3.89 GPA, Van Allen holds four of the MAC's top times this season, including the fourth fastest time in the 200 IM. At the conference championships, Van Allen swam on two third-place relays and posted two fourth-place individual finishes.
The lone female diver to earn the award for the Eagles, Shereda is a business major with a 3.81 GPA. Competing in nine meets for the Green and White, Shereda finished the season with nine top-three finishes, highlighted by five first-place scores. She won the 1-meter on four occasions, including a career-best score of 291.61 versus Bowling Green, Jan. 29. Shereda cracked the 300-point barrier for the first time in her career against Wayne State, Jan. 22, claiming first on the 3-meter with a career-best score of 318.98. At the MAC Championships, Shereda placed ninth on the 1-meter and fifth on the 3-meter before closing out the season with a 22nd-place showing at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships.

She tied the school record in the 100 breast with a first-place finish versus Akron, Jan. 23, before breaking the record in EMU's season finale against Bowling Green, Jan. 29, with a time of 1:01.20. She then broke her own record at the MAC Championships, Feb. 26-28, winning the 100 breast title with a time of 59.46 while also setting the meet and conference record. Additionally, she swam the second leg of EMU's championship-winning 400 Medley Relay, helping the team to a program-best time of 3:37.17. A First Team All-MAC selection, she tied for fourth at the MAC Championships in the 200 breast with a career-best time of 2:15.36. Duncan became the first freshman in program history to qualify for nationals, competing as the 14th-seeded swimmer in the 100 breast and earning All-American Honorable Mention recognition.
