YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University football program does not open fall camp for another seven weeks, but the newest Eagles are already getting their first taste of college life. The 2016 incoming class arrived en masse Sunday, June 19, to begin the transition from high school star to EMU freshman.
The incoming student-athletes started the weekend by moving in to their dorm rooms for the upcoming academic year. Following a team meeting with parents, each future Eagle entered Rynearson Stadium through the tunnel as his name and respective accolades were announced over the speakers.
Once the entire team took the field, the Eagles split up into multiple teams to square off against one another in a bocce ball tournament. The weekend's festivities concluded with a family potluck after the competitive action.
So much for a summer break as summer II classes began Monday at Eastern Michigan.
"At Eastern, we do a great job with the summer bridge program," Head Coach Chris Creighton mentioned. "These guys will get started in a couple classes without the enormity of actual fall. It's being able to take a couple classes, being able to be trained with our strength staff and getting a month under their belt before we start camp. When the season starts, they are going to know their way around and have six credit hours under their belt and it's just a nice segue to get off to a great start."
Fans can catch the incoming class, as well as the rest of the 2016 Eagles for the first time when the Green and White kicks off the season, Sept. 2, versus Mississippi Valley State University on the gray turf inside Rynearson Stadium. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3. Tickets are now on sale online at EMUEagles.com/tickets, by calling 734.487.2282 or by visiting the EMU Ticket Office daily between 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
