YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team began a new series of speakers titled Champions for Life last week, May 18. The series, which will feature a total of three speakers throughout the next month, focuses on developing life skills to prepare the team for life after their collegiate football careers have ended.
"As a program we want to coach more than X's and O's," EMU Head Football Coach Chris Creighton said. "This series is about bringing in speakers about various relevant topics that are going to help our guys learn, grow, make good decisions, and succeed."
The first week featured a presentation by, Austin Moss from the NFL office and Steve Sanders, who is a former NFL player. The duo spoke to the team about 'habitudes.' More specifically, they spoke about character, decision-making, social media, and ultimately being the own driver of your life rather than simply being a passenger. Sanders discussed some of his personal story, elaborating on his own personal story and the struggles and successes he encountered while playing football in college and in the NFL.
"Steve and Austin's presentation on habititudes was outstanding," Creighton shared. "Our guys were really engaged."
In week two, the team welcomed former Ohio State University running back Maurice Clarett, as the second speaker in the series. Clarett shared his tumultuous life outside of football, including his dismissal from OSU and eventual imprisonment.
"Maurice was brutally honest with our guys and it made a huge impact," Creighton added. "It is inspiring to see the path that he is on now."
Finally, E-Club Hall of Famer and former football player Brett Petersmark will conclude the series in June by talking about smart budgeting and common financial issues that many people face.
"We try to coach more than just one area of life," said Creighton. "We are just trying to help men grow and we think that sometimes, outside voices can help us achieve that."
