YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University rowing team landed seven of its athletes on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2016 scholar athletes list, the association announced, May 26.

EMU's honoree's include junior Samantha Allen (Pomona, N.J.-Absegami), senior Emily Burks (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing), senior Ashley Gilmore (Arlington, Wash.-Lakewood), senior Tauan Jeffrey (Columbus, Ohio-Fort Hayes), sophomore Annie Miller (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton), senior Steph Schlosser (Mason, Ohio-Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy), and junior Rachel Turner (Sylvania, Ohio-Sylvania Northview).

To be considered for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher, be in their sophomore year or later, and have rowed in one of their institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boats for 75 percent of the spring races or the regional conference event.

The Eagles' seven honorees tied for the most in the Colonial Athletic Association, tying Northeastern, Delaware, and Villanova.

"The athletes really keep their focus first on being students before being athletes," Head Coach Kemp Savage said.  "Their ability to excel on the water and in the classroom speaks volumes to their hard work."

These honors come on the heels of one of the most succesful academic, as well as athletic seasons in program history.  The squad finished with a 3.45 team GPA this past fall, the highest in program history.  Individually, 31 rowers finished on the EMU Honor Roll with a 3.0 GPA or better.

On the water, Eastern finished third at the 2016 CAA Rowing Championships, the first top-three finish in program history.  The Eagles totaled 18 team points in their three races on the day, allowing them to finish third out of six teams.  Individually, EMU placed two rowers on the All-CAA team for the second straight season, with Schlosser and Jeffrey earning the honors.  Schlosser was also named to the All-Academic Team for the third straight season.
