EMU had the third most honorees in the conference

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team landed eight of its players on the 2016 Academic All-MAC team, the conference announced today, June 16.  The Eagles had the third most players honored in the MAC this year, behind Kent State (11) and Toledo (10).

Those eight honored includes junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), sophomore Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic), junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh), sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington), senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel), senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), and sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern).

Beaton, Delaplane, Martin and Montgomey all earned the award for the second straight season, while McGeein garnered Academic All-MAC status for the third time in his storied career.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics.  To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.  First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Beaton finished second on the team with a 4.05 ERA, as well as a 2.76 ERA in MAC games.  The reliever was second in appearances, totaling 33.1 innings in 23 trips to the mound.  He struck out 29 batters while holding his opponents to a .230 batting average.  The righty earned two wins, and had a team-lead tying three saves on the season.  He holds a 3.42 GPA in aviation management technology.

DeVenney saw action in 31 games for EMU, making 12 starts in the outfield.  In 40 at-bats, he totaled five hits including two doubles and three RBI's.  Used as a go to pinch runner, the speedy outfielder scored 11 runs, which was good for 10th on the team.  He was also a reliable defensive weapon, not making an error in 28 putouts with two assists.  Deenney has a 3.88 GPA while majoring in management.

Delaplane had the most appearances on the bump for EMU in 2016, making 24 trips to the mound on the season.  This included three starts, and totaled 50 innings in all.  The righty finished with a 4.50 ERA, as well as a team-best 2.49 in MAC play.  He was second on the team with 49 strikeouts, while racking up a team-best six wins, as well as tying a team-lead with three saves.  His career wins (12) and saves (10) rank in the top-25 all-time at EMU.  He currently holds a 3.60 GPA while majoring in marketing.

Lett was a mainstay in the infield, making 44 appearances at second base and shortstop, including 36 starts.  In his 93 at-bats, Lett collected 17 hits and drove in eight runs, while scoring 14 as well.  He was the team's most effective bunter, laying down 10 sacrifices, which was sixth in the MAC and 88th in the nation.  He was also dangerous on the base paths, swiping 12 bases in 12 attempts.  Lett holds a 3.62 GPA as an accounting major.

Martin wrapped up his EMU career with his finest season in the Green and White.  The utility player set career-highs in every major offensive category in his 44 games and 39 starts.  He collected 35 hits, which included 10 doubles, a triple and six home runs.  This resulted in the team's third-best slugging percentage, with a .461 mark.  Martin also knocked in the teams fifth best number of runs with 23 RBI's, also scoring 22 runs himself.  He started the season off with a bang, going 4-for-5 in the season opener vs Omaha, including a double and four RBI's.  It was one of three four-hit games and one of two four-RBI games of the season for EMU.  Martin finished his EMU academic career with a 3.31 GPA in supply chain management.

McGeein completed one of the most storied careers in EMU history, culminating in All-MAC First Team Honors.  Splitting time between third and first base, the veteran ended his EMU career ranking in the top-25 all-time categories of six different statistics, including finishing fifth all time in home runs with 32.  In 2016, McGeein appeared in 58 of the 59 games, making 54 starts.  He finished with the team's third best batting average, hitting for a .283 mark (.325 in MAC play).  This included 53 hits, 10 doubles, and 13 home runs.  The career-high 13 dingers was third in the MAC and 55th in the nation.  Besides home runs, McGeein also led EMU in slugging (.545), runs scored (39), total bases (102), and walks (33), and was also second in RBI's (35).  He finished his time at EMU with a 3.24 GPA in exercise science.

Williams had a breakthrough season for EMU in 2016, on his way to being named to the All-MAC Second Team.  In 57 games and 53 starts, Williams led Eastern in hits and batting average, collecting 64 hits for a .308 average.  He had a team-high 11 doubles, as well as two triples and two home runs.  He was also second in walks with 18, while knocking in 25 runs and scoring 27 as well.  He was named MAC West Player of the Week the first weekend of the season after hitting .500 over his first four games.  His outstanding work on the field, as well as in the classroom, earned him Academic All-District honors from COSIDA.  Williams holds a 3.80 GPA as a management major.
