Women second in Jacoby Trophy race; Men take fourth in Reese Trophy standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — With another record-setting season in the books for the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics, the Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women's athletic program turned in a runner-up showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men's athletic program turned in a fourth-place finish in the battle for the Reese Trophy.

It marked just the second time since 1999-2000 that Eastern Michigan placed inside the top-four spots in both standings. The other time occurred in 2013-14 when the Green and White were third on the women's side and fourth on the men's.

Eastern Michigan became the first program since the University of Akron in 2005-06 to win the women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field championships all within one season. Overall, women's swimming & diving finished as the runner-up at the championships, while gymnastics was second in the regular season and captured the league's tournament title. The Jacoby Trophy is named after former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby, who served the league from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the league's structure.

Kent State University won the women's team title with a 9.525 average followed in order by EMU (8.409), Western Michigan (8.00), Miami (7.85), Akron (7.286), Ohio (7.263), Northern Illinois (7.088), Central Michigan (6.90), Buffalo (6.61), Toledo (5.775), Bowling Green (4.921) and Ball State (4.792).

Last year, EMU won its first Jacoby Trophy and has finished in the top-five the past three seasons.

The EMU men finished fourth in 2015-16, with Akron (10.714) claiming the championship. Western Michigan had a 8.40 average for its men's sports followed by Kent State at 8.375. Rounding out the final standings was EMU (8.167), Central Michigan (7.357), Ball State (6.75), Ohio (6.417), Northern Illinois (6.25), Buffalo (6.20), Miami (6.00), Toledo (5.33) and Bowling Green (4.083).

On the men's side, the cross country team notched its 20th MAC title, while the men's swimming & diving team brought home its conference-leading 33rd championship.

Eastern has won the Reese Trophy four times, capturing the title in 1987-88, 1990-91, 1995-96, and 2007-08.

The Reese Trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese, the first-ever MAC Commissioner who served the league from its inception in 1946 until retiring in 1964.

When compiling Reese and Jacoby Trophy points, all MAC-sponsored sports receive points. The sum of those total points is then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school, resulting in an average point total. The school with the highest average is awarded the trophy.

Coupled with six Mid-American Conference team titles and 33 individual MAC championships, the 2015-16 campaign was one of the most successful seasons in Eastern Michigan history. In the classroom, EMU student-athletes posted a 3.194 grade point average (GPA) during the winter semester, the second-highest mark on record.  It was the 13th term in a row EMU student-athletes have earned over a 3.0 GPA.
