Gallein Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships on Day Two of NCAA East Regional

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team followed up a solid opening day with another fantastic performance at the NCAA East Regional, today, May 27. The final event on the day proved to be the highlight, as the Eagles earned their first qualification to the NCAA Championships, which will take place June 8-11.
The Green and White began the day in the pole vault with a pair of Eagles competing for a ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Championships. Leading the way for Eastern was senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio – Pandora-Gilboa), who placed 24th after finishing with a vault of 4.10 meters/ 13 feet 5.25-inches. In addition to Braidic, EMU was also represented by junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian). The Grandville, Mich. native posted a mark of 3.95 meters/ 12 feet 11.50-inches to finish 39th.
The highlight of the day came in the 3000m steeplechase, where senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium – University of Leuven) punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships. Gallein was the first to cross the finish line in her heat, posting a time of 9:58.61 to place third overall. This marks the second consecutive season in which Gallein has qualified to the national championship in the 3000m steeple.
The Eagles will finish up their time in Jacksonville tomorrow, May 28, with three more events. The day will begin at 3 p.m. with the triple jump, after which the 1500m quarterfinals will take place at 6:30 p.m. Finally, the meet will conclude with the 5000m run at 8:05 p.m.
