Student-athletes at EMU scored a 3.194 GPA in the latest term
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics capped off the 2015-16 season with some outstanding news about the academic performance of its student-athletes. The Eagles posted a 3.194 grade point average (GPA) during the winter semester, the second-highest mark on record.
This is the 13th term in a row EMU student-athletes have earned over a 3.0 GPA, the EMU Student-Athlete Support Services office announced Thursday, May 26. Coupled with six Mid-American Conference team titles and 33 individual MAC championships, the 2015-16 campaign was one of the most successful seasons in Eastern Michigan history.
"As a department, we set great academic, athletic, and personal expectations for all of our student-athletes," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "This year, our student-athletes' performances illustrate their commitment to these three pillars. Our coaches have established a culture where academic excellence and athletic achievement is expected. We are so proud of their efforts and ability to balance the demands of being a student-athlete. The Student-Athlete Support Services staff is also instrumental in helping guide and inspire our student-athletes to achieve at the highest level possible."
The golf team led all men's teams in Winter 2016 with a 3.620 GPA, while the best women's GPA was turned in by the gymnastics team at 3.650. There were 42 student-athletes who posted 4.0 GPAs during the winter semester, while 343, or 67 percent, had 3.0 or better GPAs.
"I am so proud of our student-athletes and their academic success this semester," added Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services Dr. Talea Drummer. "Having so many commitments outside of the classroom can make it challenging to balance academics and yet they are able to do well. I also appreciate the village that it takes, which includes everyone from our SASS staff, the coaches, administrators, and everyone who encourages our students to succeed and strive for greatness."
Additionally, the cumulative GPA for all student-athletes was the department's second-best tally at 3.252. The mark is just shy of the all-time record of 3.259 set during the 2015 Winter semester.
Of EMU's athletics programs, 17 teams finished the semester with a GPA better than 3.0.
