Five Eagles Named to All-MAC First Team

The Green and White also put three on the Second-Team
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Following a hard-fought second-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team placed five student-athletes on the All-MAC First-Team, announced today, May 16, by the league office. Additionally, the Eagles put a trio on the second team as well.
Junior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio - Findlay) nabbed first team honors after bringing home the gold in the 400m dash, crossing the finish line in 46.55 to edge out the second-place finisher by eight tenths of a second. Brown also finished third in the 200m with a time of 21.28 and fourth in the long jump after posting a mark of 7.50 meters/ 24 feet 7.25-inches, which was the 10th-best jump in program history.
Also earning the honor was redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee), who brought home a pair of event titles for the Green and White while being named the Most Valuable Performer. Fink won both the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m, leading an EMU sweep in the latter. The redshirt junior's time of 8:48.80 in the steeplechase was nearly eight seconds quicker than second-place, while he won the 5000m after clocking in at 14:43.83. Also earning first team honors was redshirt sophomore Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason) in the 10000m. Despite the race being rescheduled to early in the morning, Raymond made the most of the circumstances, winning the event by five seconds with a mark of 29:41.07.
Redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. - Murrieta Valley) walked away with the gold in the decathlon, earning a total of 7604 points to defend his title from last season. The final first team honoree from the Green and White was freshman Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.- Parkland). Ziegenfuss dominated in the javelin throw, notching an impressive mark of 67.44 meters/ 221 feet 3.5-inches, which was both a personal-best and the furthest throw in the EMU record books. The Allentown, Pa. native was also named the Men's Field Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the meet.
Eastern also placed a trio on the All-MAC Second-Team. Both seniors Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis. - Bradford) and Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif. - Vista Del Lago) earned the distinction by helping the 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish with a time of 3:09.91. Additionally, redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. - Williamsville) earned the honor after claiming silver in the hammer throw with a school-record launch of 64.28 meters/ 210 feet 11-inches.
Eastern now has a weekend free from competition. Up next will be the NCAA East Regional, May 26-28, in Jacksonville, Fla, where select individuals will compete for a chance to qualify to the NCAA Championships, June 8-10.
