EMU outhit NIU 9-8 in the game
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't break through in a 2-1 defeat to Northern Illinois University, Saturday, May 14 at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (19-30, 9-11 MAC) had many opportunities throughout the contest, but couldn't find the clutch play.
As evidenced by the fact that EMU almost broke through the entire game, they had one more hit than NIU (21-28, 14-9 MAC), finishing with nine. This marked the fifth defeat this season in which EMU has outhit their opponent.
Two pitchers combined to go the distance for Eastern in the game. Starting and taking the tough loss was senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) after going six innings and only giving up one earned run, while striking out four. Finishing the final three innings in relief was junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), who did not allow a run on just two hits, while striking out four as well.
The nine hits were spread among seven batters. Senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) extending his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-3 game, including a walk. Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) had the other two-hit game, collecting two singles. The shortstop also swiped his 33rd base of the season.
The Eagles manufactured a run in the first after a lead off, nine-pitch walk from senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.). The second hitter, Gill, ripped a single to right, placing runners on first and third. On an attempted steal of second, Wilson charged home, getting EMU on the board 1-0.
On the mound, Gallardo cruised through the first four innings, striking out a pair. In the fifth, he yielded a run after a bases loaded sacrifice fly, tying the game a one each.
NIU broke the tie in the sixth on an unearned run. With a runner on second with two outs, a chopper to short was fumbled, causing a late throw. On the throw, the runner scored after advancing to third, giving NIU a 2-1 advantage.
EMU got a golden opportunity in the eighth with runners on second and third with one out and the bases loaded with two outs, but NIU worked their way of the jam, preserving the 2-1 lead into the final inning.
Meanwhile on the bump, Beaton worked his third consecutive scoreless inning in the ninth, striking out a pair to keep the Eagles' deficit at just one run. Despite getting a man on in the ninth, a double play erased any threat, ending the one-run defeat.
Eastern will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow on Senior Day in game three of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Oestrike with the Senior Day festivities taking place approximately 20 minutes before first pitch.
