Eagles Add Three More for 2016 Campaign

EMU volleyball welcome a transfer, along with a pair of freshmen

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Kimi Olson has announced that Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont (Austin Peay)) will be transferring to EMU for the upcoming 2016 campaign. After spending two years as a Governor at Austin Peay University, Ferguson will be eligible immediately for the Eagles in Coach Olson's second season at the helm of the volleyball program. In addition to Ferguson, the Green and White will add a pair of freshmen to the squad in Mary Helen Beacom (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove North) and Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian).

"I am extremely excited to bring so much new talent to the gym this fall," remarked Olson. "The incoming class will fight to make a huge contribution this fall after graduating a deep and  talented senior class."

At APU, Ferguson was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List. She appeared in 21 matches and 68 sets during the 2015 campaign. In total, the 6-foot-1 middle blocker recorded 126 kills, while hitting at a .215 percentage. On the defensive side of the net, Ferguson racked up a total of 51 blocks, including 22 solo. As a freshman, Ferguson saw time in just six matches and finished her freshman year with five total blocks.

The Lemont, Ill. native attended Lemont High School where she competed as an Indian for Chris Zogata. Ferguson led her squad to a career record of 102-47 and two Illinois High School Association regional titles, along with a state sectional runner-up. She racked up 437 kills and 295 blocks, while hitting at a .351 clip in four seasons at Lemont. She earned all-conference honors and was named all-area by Joliet Herald News, Southtown Star, and Suburban Life newspapers after posting 160 kills and 111 blocks (1.32 blocks per set) during her senior year.

Beacom joins EMU as a setter from Downers Grove, Ill., where she played for Mark Wasik at Downers Grove North High School. The 5-foot-6 Beacom was a four-year letterwinner in high school while also earning three varsity letters in soccer. For her career, she racked up 2,538 assists, 735 digs and 101 aces. As a sophomore, Beacom earned Suburban Life 2013 South All-Area Honorable Mention accolades, while also being named to the all-area team after helping her squad to a regional championship. Overall for her career, Beacom was named to the West Suburban All-Conference Team as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Schomer comes to Ypsilanti following her graduation from Oakland Christian School in Auburn Hills, Mich. Schomer was a three-time varsity letterwinner for Priscilla Larned. The 5-foot-5 defensive specialist is a two-time All-State Honorable Mention award winner, while also earning all-district accolades as a sophomore. As a junior, Schomer earned all-county second team honors before jumping to the first team following her senior campaign. In addition to her success on the court, the Rochester, Mich. native excels in the classroom as well. At Oakland Christian, Schomer was named to the High Honor Roll on three occasions, while she has been a member of the National Honor Society over the last two years. Additionally, she has earned the American Citizenship Award twice while earning Presidential Physical fitness status once.
