DETROIT (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team almost knocked off the Michigan State University Spartans for the second time this season, but ultimately fell by a 3-2 margin Wednesday evening, May 11, at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. The game was tied in the seventh inning before MSU (32-13) scored an unearned to defeat the Eagles (19-28).
Despite the loss, EMU's pitching staff was stout in the contest. A trio of Eagles combined to go 7.1 innings and did not allow an earned run. Freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) got the start, and went three steady innings, only allowing three hits. Later in the contest, junior Justin Thompson (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth (Concordia)), who took a tough luck loss, pitched 2.2 innings only giving up one hit and one unearned run, while striking out a batter. Finally junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) finished out the final 1.2 innings, not allowing a hit and striking out two.
Offensively EMU scored their two runs on three hits. Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) had one of the hits, extending his hitting streak to 14 games, and also scored a run. The lone RBI came from sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) on an RBI single.
The first three innings went by in a breeze with only MSU collecting three hits. The starter Feldman stranded three Spartan runners, and kept the score 0-0 into the fourth.
After MSU went to the pen in the fourth, EMU was able to break through. Wilson led off with his streak-extending bunt single. He was quick to steal second, and then on a steal of third, he came around to score on a wild throw, giving EMU the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
The Spartans broke through in the fourth with a pair of runs on a two-run home run down the line in left field, giving MSU the 2-1 lead into the fifth inning.
The Eagles were quick to respond in the third, tying the game with some clutch hitting by the end of the order. With runners on first and second after a walk and hit by pitch, senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) loaded the bags with a single. Then the nine hitter Lett knocked one in on a single to left field. With two outs, sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) flied one to the warning track in right, but the threat was ended, keeping the game tied at two.
After entering in the fourth with two outs, Thompson retired the next seven batters, including one by strikeout, keeping the 2-2 tie into the seventh inning. A couple runners reached in the seventh on an error and walk, forcing EMU to go to the pen again. Despite Beaton getting the first runner to strikeout, MSU stole a run on a double steal and a throwing error, giving them a 3-2 lead into the final two innings.
The Spartan bullpen was lockdown in the final two innings, not allowing an Eagle base runner, as MSU sealed the 3-2 victory.
Eastern returns home this weekend for its final home MAC series against Northern Illinois University. First pitch of the series against the Huskies is set for 6 p.m. Prior to the game members of 1975 and 1976 EMU baseball teams which advanced to the College World Series will be honored. Admission to the game is free.
