Baseball Runs Away with 11-5 Victory over Oakland

Eastern had three home runs and five doubles in the contest

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came out on top of rainy and sloppy contest against Oakland University, 11-5, Tuesday, May 10 at Oakland Baseball Stadium. The game marked the fourth double digit run game and second in last three games for EMU (19-27).

Eastern collected 13 hits as a team, including three home runs and five doubles.  It was the third time EMU has hit three or more home runs in a game this season and it also tied a season-high in doubles.

Individually, four Eagles had two-hit games, while three had multi-RBI contests.  Leading the way was freshman John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) who had two hits and three RBI's including his first career home run.  Senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) hit his team-leading 11th home run in a two-hit two-RBI game.  It was the 30th of his career, putting him in a tie for fifth place on the all-time list.  Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) also clubbed a solo home run, his seventh of the season.

On the bump, a couple of freshmen had firsts as Gary Clift Jr. (Brunswick, Ohio-Brunswick) got his first collegiate win after pitching an inning of relief.  Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) earned his first collegiate save after coming in with a one run lead and shutting down OU for 2.2 innings, only allowing one hit while striking out a career best three.

After a scoreless first, the Eagles broke through in the second with Stidham's solo home run, a bomb to left center field through the rain, giving EMU the early 1-0 lead.

They scored again in the second with a run on a pair of hits.  Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) led off with a 13-game hitting streak-extending double, and he was advanced to third on a groundout.  With two outs, junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) doubled down the line in right to drive him in, extending the lead to 2-0.

On the mound, starter sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) got through the first three without giving up any runs, while striking out three as well.  He struck out another in a one-two-three fourth inning, keeping the 2-0 score into the fifth.

Mattson nearly made it through the fifth, but eventually yielded three unearned runs on three hits and an error, giving OU (20-22) a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning.  They plated another unearned run in the seventh after a walk, sacrifice bunt, passed ball, and RBI groundout.  After six innings, OU led 4-2.

The Eagles broke through in the seventh inning, taking a 6-4 lead.  With runners on second and third after a walk and fielder's choice, Montgomery scored one on a ball to second.  The next batter, Rensel Jr., then smacked his first career homer, an opposite field shot to left, scoring three.

OU tightened the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh with a run after an RBI groundout.  Eastern stranded an Oakland runner on third though, keeping the one run lead with two innings to play.

Eastern MIchigan got the run back immediately in the eighth with a single from senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), followed by an RBI double from sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), EMU's fourth double of the day.  This was followed by the Eagles' third homer of the day, this time from McGeein.  His two-run shot gave EMU its largest lead, 9-5, into the bottom of the eighth.

After a scoreless frame from Hester that included two strikeouts, EMU tacked on some insurance in the ninth.  Rensel Jr. led off with a single and runners went to second and third after a double from Stidham.  One run scored on a wild pitch, and the second came around on a single up the middle from freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern).  This gave EMU an 11-5 cushion into the bottom of the ninth.  Hester completed the ninth inning without further damage, sealing the 11-5 victory.

Eastern gets back onto the diamond tomorrow with the game against Michigan State University at Comerica Park in Detroit.  First pitch against the Spartans is set for 6:35 p.m.
