YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Despite cold weather mimicking a November game, the Eastern Michigan University football team conducted its annual Spring Game Saturday, April 9, inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium. After four quarters with 15 plays each, the defense came out on top, 28-20.

Redshirt freshman Breck Turner (Norwalk, Ohio-Norwalk) led the Eagles rushing attack on the day, carrying the ball 16 times for 84 yards, with one touchdown and a long of 24 yards. Redshirt junior Brogan Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Toledo St. John's Jesuit) competed five passes on the day, highlighted by a 44-yard bomb to redshirt freshman Dieuly Aristilde (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Boynton Beach) down the sideline. The top defender on the day was redshirt sophomore Lion King (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield), who finished with five tackles and one and a half sacks.

With the game pitting the offense, wearing White, against the defense, donning Green, a specialized scoring system was used. The offense earned one point for a first down, three points for a field goal, six points for a touchdown, and one point for a PAT. On the other side of the ball, the defense earned two points for a stop on downs, five points for a turnover, 11 points for a defensive touchdown, and one point for a PAT. Additionally, they were also able to receive three points for a missed field goal, seven points for a missed field goal in the red zone, four points for a made red zone field goal, and three points apiece for a red zone fourth down stop and a fourth down stop.

The defense got on board first, forcing the offense to stall on their first drive to open up a 2-0 lead. From there, however, Turner burst through the line for a 24-yard gain to give the offense a point. The drive continued, notching another first down to tie it up at two apiece. Turner then found the end zone for the first touchdown of the game, making the score 9-2 in favor of the offense.

However, the defense quickly responded with a blocked PAT to put the score at 9-3. Redshirt freshman Maxx Crosby (Colleyville, Texas-Colleyville Heritage) then picked up a nice sack for the defense, putting the offense in a third-and-long situation. A long pass was then broken up by redshirt sophomore Ross Williams (Birmingham, Mich.-Groves), giving the defense two more points to put the Green squad at five.

Junior quarterback Todd Porter (O'Fallon, Ill.-O'Fallon (Western Kentucky-Garden City C.C.)) then picked up another first down on a QB keeper, after which the offense kept it rolling by picking up their second consecutive fresh set of downs. At this point, the score stood at 12-7 with the White ahead. However, the defense clamped down and forced a three-and-out, putting the score at 12-9.

Later on, redshirt freshman Kezio Snelling (Lutz, Fla.-Steinbrenner) then had a nice catch in traffic down the sideline, picking up 30 yards and getting another first down for the offense. The drive then stalled, with the offense attempting a field goal courtesy of redshirt senior Brendan Renius (Lambertville, Mich.-Bedford Senior). However, his kick went wide right, giving three points to the defense. At the half, the White team held a slim 14-12 lead.

Following the halftime break, the Eagles worked on their field goals, with Renius converting a nice kick into the wind. The offense then picked up where they left off, picking up another first down. However, redshirt sophomore Tim Gordon (St. Paul, Minn.-Cretin-Derham Hall) snagged a key interception, giving the defense five points for the turnover and a 17-15 lead.

The defense kept the momentum, picking up two more points on another stop on downs. King picked up a big sack for the defense, giving the Green team another stop on downs and a 21-15 lead. From there, the offense made their way into the red zone with an opportunity to pick up their second touchdown of the day.

Redshirt freshman Paul Fricano (Rochester, N.Y.-Churchville-Chili) came on and converted a field goal for the offense, putting the score at 21-19 with the defense still ahead. Lion King then picked up his second sack of the game, increasing the Green squad lead to 23-19.

The offense continued fighting to the end, picking up another first down to put the score at 23-20. The trend continued however, as the defense came up clutch on another broken-up pass to go ahead by six, 26-20. Another stop on downs gave the Green two more points putting the score at 28-20. The whistles sounded shortly thereafter, with the defense claiming the victory, 28-20.
